The Association

Assoporti, (the Italian Association of Ports, is an organism that puts together Port Authorities, other special bodies in ports, Chambers of Commerce of port cities and the Italian Organisation of Chambers of Commerce), together with its members and in cooperation with other Associations has, amongst its objectives, that of realizing policies for the development of the field, as well as the enhancing of advanced technologies. As part of its representation activities Assoporti, participates and contributes to the discussions on a European Union level regarding Trans European policies. The Association sustains policies that regard the Network of the Motorways of the Sea and, as a member of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), it actively participates in discussions regarding the development of the transport system. The Italian Port System has many functions and an excellent potential. It is part of a specific law system for the development of this field. The National Law that regulates ports clearly defines the diverse functions between the different "parties" that work in port. There is a clear distinction between the public sector that must plan infrastructures, develop and control, and the private sector that must develop economic and entrepreneurial activities. The expansion of ports requires planning that must take into consideration the necessity of giving a strong impulse to territorial marketing so as to broaden knowledge and information on infrastructures and services located in port areas.
